Will fabric dye stain my sink?
Do not use your bathtub or porcelain sink as it will probably stain. My kitchen sink is stainless steal so it was ideal for this project but I was sure to remove all dishes before the project and I cleaned the sink after. You don’t want to eat dye. Gross.

Can you leave fabric in dye overnight?
Leave your fabric in the dye for as little or as long as you like. The finished color will be slightly lighter than it looks like when wet. I recommend leaving it in for at least ONE hour, or longer.
Should you rinse tie dye with hot or cold water?
Caring for Your Tie Dye After the first couple washes, wash tie dye in cold water to prevent dye from fading. Use gentle, color-safe detergents. Hang your items to dry, rather than using the dryer.
What happens if you leave tie dye too long?
Just like when the dyes have been mixed up too long. So more of your color will wash out in the end, on rare occasions, all of it, when you use hot water to mix your dye instead of warm, as suggested. Cold water is a problem with some colors.
Should you tie dye wet or dry?
We generally recommend washing your fabric and leaving it damp before tie – dyeing, as the dye has an easier time saturating the fabric when it’s wet. But depending on the technique and the look you want, you can apply dye to dry fabric. Just make sure the fabric has been washed (if it’s new) to remove the sizing.
Will Rit dye stain my washer?
Nonetheless, we can promise you Rit won’t permanently stain any metal component on your machine. Rit has been used in washing machines for decades, dating back to the time when the electric washing machine was invented in the 1950s. What is Rit’s shelf life? Rit has an unlimited shelf life. When storing liquid dyes, be sure the cap is secure to prevent evaporation. Powder dyes should be stored in a cool, dry place.
What can I use instead of dye fixative?
The only substitutes for soda ash as dye fixer are high-pH chemicals, such as trisodium phosphate or sodium hydroxide. Soda ash is the best choice, however. Note that sodium carbonate is of no use in dyeing with natural dyes, nor with all-purpose dyes.
How long does tie dye sit for?
Let the fabric sit for 2-24 hours. The longer you can let the fabric sit, the easier it will be to wash out loose dye from the fabric. The length of time you let the fabric sit is not overly critical. If you are in a hurry, let the fabric sit for as long as your deadline will allow.

Once the dye has been activated by mixing with water, it will last up to 72 hours, so we generally recommend using your dye within that timeframe.
Can you save tie dye for later?
How long can I keep a dye once it has been mixed with water? Do not add water to dye until you are prepared to apply it. Apply dye within 24 hours after mixing. Dye left unapplied after 24 hours will begin to lose concentration and will result in noticeably weaker color intensity.
